Márquez took control in Australia and left Martín needing a Sunday comeback
The Ducati rider won the Sprint at Phillip Island, reached 365 championship points and opened a ten-point lead over Jorge Martín, who was taken to the circuit medical center after losing control.
This Saturday was cold and gray at Phillip Island. Ideal weather for a Sprint: no sun to soften everyone’s nerves and enough grip to make every mistake look even more expensive. Marc Márquez came out on top after a direct duel with Jorge Martín that lasted eight laps, and the championship now has a new look.
Márquez crossed the finish line first and added his 24th Sprint victory to his record. Álex Márquez completed a Ducati one-two, while Fabio Di Giannantonio recovered from eighth place on the grid to claim third. The Italian manufacturer swept the podium.
The duel that changed the race
For the first eight laps, the race was a close fight between Márquez and Martín, with both riders trading very small advantages. Martín was looking for a way through when he lost control of his Aprilia and crashed. He was taken immediately to the circuit’s medical center and remained under observation to determine whether he could compete in Sunday’s main race.
With Martín out, Márquez had no need to take extra risks. The Ducati rider managed the gap, crossed first and left the remaining laps without drama. The result gave him 365 championship points, ten more than Martín, whose total stands at 355.
- Márquez won the Sprint and moved ten points ahead in the championship.
- Álex Márquez finished second and Di Giannantonio third, completing a Ducati one-two-three.
- Martín crashed while fighting for the lead and was transferred to the medical center.
- Marco Bezzecchi, Pedro Acosta, Ai Ogura, Brad Binder, Jack Miller, Diogo Moreira and Iker Lecuona completed the top ten.
- The main race on Sunday will be MotoGP’s last event at Phillip Island.
The pressure now shifts to the longer race. Every point matters because the Australian round is the final one at this circuit, and the championship has spent weeks with the lead changing hands. Martín will need to recover physically, regain concentration and attack from the front if he wants to reduce the deficit.
“The Sprint was won, the podium was Ducati and the lead is now ten points. But this is not a tie: it is a situation where the rider in front has room to breathe, while the rider chasing still has to solve several problems before the flag drops.”Leandro Tkachuk, Deportes
My forecast, with all the caution of someone watching from the stands: Márquez will be very difficult to beat if he manages the race without complications. Martín can still make a comeback, but the comeback will not be just about coming back. It will be about arriving at the start line in good shape and avoiding the kind of error that took him out on Saturday. If he does that, the ten-point gap will become much less comfortable. I reserve the right to be wrong, naturally.
