Grecia investigates a Possible Match Fixing Network Led from the Top
The president of the Hellenic Basketball Federation and four referees were arrested in a case that reaches roughly 50 games, from the top division to youth and school competitions. The discovery of 820,000 euros in cash raised the stakes even further.
The heat in Greece is not only meteorological. This time it comes from a basketball investigation that reached the highest levels of the sport: Vangelis Liolios, president of the Hellenic Basketball Federation, was arrested along with four referees in a case involving alleged match fixing and bribes.
The operation, led by sports prosecutor Apostolis Grammenos, produced six arrest warrants. Five were carried out. Giorgos Mavraganis, a businessman and former player who collaborated with the federation, was still being sought when the information was published.
A case that goes far beyond the first division
The judicial file covers about 50 matches played over the past decade. It includes competitions ranging from the top division to lower categories, youth tournaments and school games. There is even a match that was played outside Greece. In other words, the alleged scheme was not confined to a few noisy games. It appears to have spread through the basketball calendar like a leak through an old gym roof.
The most striking evidence was found during a search in Katerini. Police discovered 820,000 euros in cash at the home of one of the referees under investigation. The origin of the money is still being analyzed by the courts and has become one of the central pieces of the case.
The investigation took shape after an April complaint filed by Maroussi against the federation and its president. Eight witnesses provided statements. Two of them were considered key because of their direct knowledge of the alleged irregularities. Both acknowledged having received bribes in the past and cooperated with the authorities. Investigators also collected messages and other material that, according to them, would reinforce the hypothesis of an organized network.
The case also had an immediate international consequence. EuroLeague provisionally suspended referee Vasiliki Tsaroucha from all its competitions until both the judicial process and the organization's internal review are completed. The Greek federation called an extraordinary meeting of its board and said it would continue to cooperate with the authorities.
- Vangelis Liolios, president of the Hellenic Basketball Federation, was arrested.
- Four referees were also detained in the investigation.
- Around 50 matches from the last decade are being examined.
- The case includes youth, school and lower-division competitions.
- Police found 820,000 euros in cash during a search in Katerini.
At this point, the important word is alleged. The investigation is not a final conviction, and the evidence still has to be weighed in court. Even so, the scale of the case is difficult to ignore. A federation president, several referees, a former player, a cash amount that looks like a small fortune and a decade of matches form a rather uncomfortable picture. My forecast is cautious: the basketball world will be watching every next development, although, as always, I reserve the right to be wrong.
